Chakra yoga

In the yoga tradition, an individual is not only a physical body but also an energy system. In yoga we therefore work with balancing the energy system - what we call the chakra system - to achieve sustainable health, well-being and balance in life.

About the Chakra System

According to the yoga tradition, the human body is composed of a physica body and an energy system. We therefore work with balancing the energy system, commonly known as the chakra system, in yoga with the aim to achieve sustainable health, well-being and balance in life.

Yoga creates balance in our Chakra

It is believed that in the human energy field there some 72 000 energy channels (nadis) and 7 different energy centers (chakras). In Sanskrit, chakra means "wheel". Our seven chakras are located in a straight line between the lower back and the head, parallell to the spine (please see image below). The chakras represent energy and are connected to different levels of awareness and areas in our body. Each chakra is associated with particular parts of our body, glands, functions of the nervous system, colors, elements, mantras in addition to mental, emotional and spiritual attributes.

When we focus on a pose and technique connected to our chakra, we are able to open up the energy center and create balance.

The difference between East and West

For some, talking about the chakras can at times seem a bit "spacey". But you don't have to be a firm believer to practice and experience the positive effects of yoga, pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation.

It is interesting to see the different perspectives that the Western and Eastern societies have on health. In the West, the focus is on the physical body. On the other hand, in the East you'll notice that the focus is to apply an holistic approach towards each individual and body. The intellect and the soul is perceived as one unit and it is believed that they influence each other. One school of though is not more right than the other. We believe that it is important to be open and susceptible to a holistic approach since it can broaden our view of the human body and how it works.

Life influences our balance

All chakras represent different functions of the body as well as situations and phases we encounter throughout life. Depending on how we live - habits in our daily routine, ingrained thoughts, upbringing, environment, work situation and/or family situation - our chakras can either be suppressed or overstimulated and hence become unstable. You can balance your chakras in different ways - for instance by practicing yoga, meditation and mantras. The right amount of sleep, walks, massage and conscious breathing will have a positive impact on the chakras.

Facts about our Chakras

Chakras 1-3, in the lower part of the body represent the physical energy centras and the other chakras in the upper part of our body inspires us to spiritual introspection. The heart chakra links the physical and spiritual spheres, and works as a bridge between them.
