Holiday workout – a must or a privilege?

25 juli 2014 | Av Jarno Härkönen

Summer holidays are running, people are travelling abroad or to their summer cottages. Sun brings people out to the parks and to the beaches. Now it’s time to enjoy, time to relax!

But what is relaxation, what do you enjoy doing on your vacation? Many times I have heard the phrase ”I don’t wanna work out during my holidays… you know I’m on vacation”. Many people have made working out sort of ”must” in their lives – among many other things:

”We MUST go to work, we MUST succeed, we MUST not show our feelings, we MUST be strong, we MUST eat healthy, we MUST work out,  we MUST be skinny”

In a way these things lead to a very negatively focused, goal driven environment. Think about how much more positive feelings you get just by switching out the ”must”-word to another word:

I have the privilege to go to work!
I will succeed!
I can show my feelings!
I can be strong!
have the possibility to choose healthy eating!
I can workout!
I may be skinny, I may be fat, I really don’t care!

I have been on my summer holidays for a while and the thoughts that hit me first were:

”Wow, now I have time for myself. I can practice freely, everyday, no timetables, just listening to my body and my own feelings. I have the time to do yoga everyday! I have time to focus on the things I want to develop in myself – both mentally and physically. I can read the educational books (and some leisure books as well) that I have wanted to read for months!”

It really feels like a holiday for me when I have changed ”the must”:s to ”I can”, ”I have the possibility”.  For me I get most fulfillment from those things – not just by relaxing on the sofa. I do that also sometimes, but my mind needs something else in order to relax. On the sofa I will get bored and dull-minded. Being active, creating these positive things for myself I can really feel good.

One way to make more interesting holiday pictures it to do some yoga in front of the tourist attractions:

So I don’t need to work out during my vacation. I’m privileged to work out during my vacation!

Happy Holidays
