The Architecture of the Subtle Breath đŸ©”

In this workshop we use biomechanics, and specifically repatterning the rib cage, as our entry point. We’ll work with the common habit of rib flare and how it limits the diaphragm’s ability to descend. As rib position changes, the diaphragm can do its job without “emergency breathing” from the upper chest and neck taking over. When the ribs are habitually lifted and flared, breathing tends to become faster and more vertical. As the rib cage repatterns, the breath can drop lower and feel more internally expansive, supporting calmer nervous system signalling and more effective gas exchange, while staying true to yoga as a practice of less.

Expect to move, to turn inward, and to feel the potency of LESS – less rushing, less gripping, less internal noise – until the breath becomes fertile ground for the mind to settle.

Our breath and our state of being are intimately intertwined. Stress, sedentary habits, and the constant pressure of modern life have quietly accelerated both the breath and the mind. Ancient yogic wisdom, increasingly echoed by modern physiology, points to a counterintuitive truth for many bodies today. Breathing less, not more, often brings us back to a healthier baseline, and becomes the ground from which the rest of practice can actually land.

Pranayama is frequently misunderstood as “expanding the breath” in the sense of taking bigger breaths. That confusion comes from the word ayama in pranayama. While ayama can be translated as extension or expansion, in practice it is not about adding volume. It is an internal extending that happens through refinement, like pulling soft taffy into a long, thin ribbon, smoother and more even, not larger. The breath becomes subtler, steadier, and more efficient, and because breath and mind reflect one another, that refinement supports a mind that can settle.
